Digital Editions 4.5.5 Installer Return Code 1223 [Windows]

$

Hello,

Just curious if anyone has any input on this. With the latest version of Digital Editions (4.5.5) released on June 13th, 2017, the installer does not return a '0' error code after installation. Instead of '0', each time we install the product the error code returned is '1223'. Is this a successful installation or is something failing in the background? The product seems to be installed and functional, but I would like to know (hopefully from Adobe) whether or not a 1223 signals success.

Thanks!

i  am getting the message that I have reached the maximum number of machines I can use for downloads...I have been trying for days to authorize my kobo...one machine only...but now its useless as ade is not opening my library books on the kobo...the forums say authorize and unauthorize to troubleshoot. That caused me to exceed the number ofauthorizations. no help anywhere for this

E_ADEPT_NO_TOKEN and E_ADEPT_NO_FULFILLMENT_RESULT

I have several installation of Digital Editions.

1. At my primary residence. (Personal Desktop Device #1)

2. At a secondary residence due to travel. (Personal Laptop Device #2)

3. My work desktop (Device #3)

4. My work laptop (Device #4)

I have several books which I have downloaded onto the 4 instances of Adobe Digital Edition. They all work on devices 1,2 and 3.

Today I installed ADE on Device 4.

Of the 5 books, only two loaded. The other 3 books failed with E_ADEPT_NO_TOKEN for one books and E_ADEPT_NO_FULFILLMENT_RESULT for two other books.

I tried downloading the books again. Same result.

I mapped a drive to device 3 and tried to load the books from there, as they installed perfectly on device #3. Same result.

Thus the issue is NOT with the actual ebook files. (*.acsm)

I tried the option to de-authorise device #4 and re-authorize it. Still no success.

Device #4 was ADE 4.5.x whilst Device #3 is ADE4.0. I removed 4.5 and installed 4.0. Same issue.

The issue does not appear to be related to the actual *.acsm files as I tested this with previously installed *.acsm files.

It also does not appear to be related to the client software as I tested 4.5 vs. 4.0

Is there a limit on the number of devices where I can install ADE?

Is there possible a registry issue other than the ADEPT key that needs to be removed etc.?

Embedded fonts do not display properly in ADE 4.5.5! Bug?

$

0

Software and environment
Windows 10
Adobe InDesign CS6
Calibre 2.85.1 (64 bit)
Adobe Digital Editions 4.5.5

Summary of problem 1
My EPUB produced in InDesign has embedded fonts. When I work on my EPUB in Calibre Editor and save the embedded fonts are no longer recognised in ADE. The Latin font I am using is Gentium (download: http://software.sil.org/gentium/download). I am also using a non-Latin font for a RTL language.

Steps to reproduce problem 1
1) Make book in InDesign and export to EPUB 2.0.1
2) Open file in ADE...everything works fine
3) Open file in Calibre Editor using default preferences
4) Make a change and undo it
5) Save EPUB
6) Open EPUB in ADE
7) The embedded fonts are no longer recognised!!

Fix to problem 1 and subsequent problem 2

1) Make book in InDesign and export to EPUB 2.0.1, do not embed fonts

2) Open file in Calibre Editor using default preferences, embed fonts

3) Save EPUB

4) Open EPUB in ADE

5) The fonts have embedded and can be seen in ADE but the bold weight is no longer recognised!!

Report

The Calibre developer kindly looked into this for me and says as follows:

1) The epub with embedded fonts from InDesign declares it is using the
IDPF font obfuscation algorithm but is not actually using it. At least
trying to de-obfuscate the fonts with it does not work. I'm guessing they
are using some unholy combination of the IDPF and their own obfuscation
algorithm. This is why resaving the file with the editor breaks the
fonts.

2) When embeddeding the fonts without obfuscation using the editor, I
noticed that ADE renders [one character] as bold, but nothing else.

Which means it is successfully loading the font. So this is definitely an ADE bug.

ADE will not open!

I've been using Adobe Digital Editions for a few years now, especially for ebooks from my public library via Overdrive. (I have a Kobo.) It's been fine for years, but now the program absolutely refuses to open when I click on it. I've tried opening as administrator. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling. It just will. not. work. I'm not aware of any other way to get Overdrive books onto my device. Did anyone find a fix that worked? I'm going to be really annoyed if I lose all access to my library books.

Horror story getting ADE activations reset

I needed to get my ADE device activations reset, so I did a Google search and found this web page:

E_ACT_TOO_MANY_ACTIVATIONS error in Adobe Digital Editions

There was a link to "contact us" which I followed. From the myriad choices I made the mistake of choosing Account issues -> Account settings. This mistake cost me 1 1/2 hours of my life because the Chat representative I got was not properly trained and could not understand what I was asking for.

Later the same day I found this forum post:

E_ACT_TOO_Many_Activations

While the link in the post didn't work as intended (it took me to the top level of "Contact us"), at least the link's text label told me that I wanted Account issues -> Adobe ID and signing in. (Counter-intuitive: I wasn't having a problem with my Adobe ID or with signing in to my account.)

The good news is that "Adobe ID and signing in" took me to a Chat representative who understood what I wanted and reset my device activations within 12 minutes -- not bad for a multitasking Chat representative.

From skimming the other posts in this forum my initial negative experience with getting device activations reset through Chat is hardly unique.

Constructive criticism:

1. Why not just do what Amazon does and let customers reset their device activations themselves from their account settings?

2. Failing that, fix the help link in the first web page above to go to a specific page to put in a request to have device activations reset with an email confirmation when done -- no chatting necessary.

3. Failing that, ensure that all of the Chat representatives understand what it means to reset device activations. The first Chat representative I got was completely lost.

I sincerely hope that someone at Adobe is listening.

Not able to open library books on my Kobo Glo: "Oops! This document couldn't be opened"

I am able to read library books in ADE 4.5.1.133054 on my Macbook running OSX 10.11.2, and I have no problem transferring files to my Kobo. But when I try to open them on my Kobo, I get the message: "Oops! This document couldn't be opened" due to DRM issues.

My Macbook and Kobo both have the same valid adobe ID authorization. I can also download and open Toronto library books onto my iPad and read them in the Overdrive app.

I have done a factory reset on my Kobo, ensured that the Kobo is running the latest version, uninstalled and re-installed ADE on my Macbook, deauthorized and reauthorized both my Macbook and Kobo. Nothing has worked.I am stuck!

The problem is recent. Previously I never had any difficulties transferring books from my desktop ADE to my Kobo and reading them on my Kobo.  Do any readers out there have any suggestions?  Thanks

Incorrect display of RTL ornate parentheses in ADE 4.5.5

$

I am creating an EPUB with InDesgin CS6. The document has both Arabic (RTL) and English (LTR) text.

In Arabic, although text is RTL, numerals are LTR.

In the Arabic section I am using numerals (LTR) within ornate parentheses (RTL). A paragraph style has been applied to the text and a character style to the numerals to ensure correct text direction. A sample is as follows:

Ornate-parentheses-capture.JPG

The Unicode for these ornate parentheses is as follows:

  • FD3F  ORNATE RIGHT PARENTHESIS
  • FD3E  ORNATE LEFT PARENTHESIS

The parentheses are displayed correctly in InDesign and all the EPUB readers I have tested with, apart from Adobe Digital Editions 4.5.5. For some reason, in ADE the direction of the parentheses is reversed, as follows:

Ornate-parentheses-capture-ADE.JPG

Why is ADE the only reader I can find that behaves like this, is it another bug?

E_ADEPT_DOCUMENT_TYPE_UNKNOWN downloading a book from Google Play Books

$

Hi!

As suggested by the title, I get an error when I try opening a book I downloaded from Google Play Books with ADE.

This is the error:

ADE1.png

(in English it should sound like "Unable to download. License server communication problem: E_ADEPT_DOCUMENT_TYPE_UNKNOWN").

I also tried downloading the book manually from the URL in the .acsm file, but I get another error:

ADE2.png

I contacted Google Play assistance but they couldn't help me.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling ADE, on two different PCs, but it didn't worked.

I downloaded the .acsm file many times, for .epub and .PDF version of the book, but it didn't worked.

I didn't have any problem with books downloaded before and after that one from Google Play Books.

Can someone give me any advice?

Thank you in advance.

Bonjour,

E_ADEPT_DOCUMENT_TYPE_UNKNOWN

I keep getting this error message, when I try to download my newly bought DRM-protected book.

Usually I don't have problems.

I have tried to download with versions 1.7.2, 2.0 and 3.0. Same result.

The error is not described anywhere google could find, the book store tells me to ask Adobe (which so far hasn't been possible...), so now I try the forum.

Does anybody have an idea on what I can do to get my e-book?

Thanks in advance,

Unable to download. Error getting License. License Server Communication Problem: E_ADEPT_DOCUMENT_TYPE_UNKNOWN

Hello,

I'm trying to download an ePub book (Margaret Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale" , which I purchased on Google Play Books, in order to read on my Adobe Digital Editions application on my Windows 10 laptop computer and so that I would be able to side-load it and read it on my dedicated ereader device (Pocketbook). The book can be read online on the play-book store and on the google play-book app on my android phone. However, I have been unable to download it on my computer.

When the download starts I get the message that the book cannot be downloaded and that the file type is unknown (Unable to download. Error getting License. License Server Communication Problem: E_ADEPT_DOCUMENT_TYPE_UNKNOWN:). Please see screenshot below:

2017-05-29.png

And then the application closes down:

2017-05-29 (1).png

I have also tried saving it in my Digital Editions folder and opening it from my library, without any better results.

The application has had no trouble downloading and opening other ePub books from Google Play store. The issue appears only with this specific file, which has an .ascm extension.

2017-06-03.png

When I contacted googleplay support, they finally suggested that the problem has to do with the Adobe Digital Editions application and that I should try downloading the PlayBook app or contact Adobe support. As I want to be able to read the book on my e-ink eReader device (Pocketbook), the PlayBook app isn’t much help. I'm quite disappointed.

Below I have copied my conversations with the google-support team.

Do you have any suggestions?

Thank you in advance for your assistance,

Hello Kait,

Thank you for your prompt answer.

Unfortunately, the problem has not been resolved. While I can read the e-book "The Handmaid's Tale" online, in the browser and on the Google books app of the Android phone, I can't download and open the ePub file on my computer (Windows 10), in order to read it on the Adobe Digital Editions program and side-load it onto my e-ink ereader. The file appears to be downloaded with an epub.acsm extension, but when I try to open it with the Digital Editions application, this message appears: unable to download. Error getting license. Document_type_unknown. Then the app closes down. Please see attached screenshots.

Thank you again for your help.

Myrto

I can't download new library books.  The older ones download fine and copy to my KOBO but the newer books begin to download, everything looks fine and then everything goes on hold and nothing else happens. The download doesn't finish. If I cancel, it shows up in my library as NEW and not responding will occur if I try to open it.  Any suggestions?
