Can not copy text from epub in Adobe Digital Editions and paste in e.g. Word

There are several threads in this support forum asking all likely the same question, how to copy text passages from an epub opened in Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) to another application or text editor like Word, Notepad, Open Office ...

how do I copy text from an epub book?

Digitl Edition EBook copy text option not available

... but remain unanswered. That's a little odd, due to the fact that it seems to be an issue for a bunch of people.

Is it just impossible or a bug in ADE?

I use latest version ADE 4.5.1 on Windows 7. The tested epubs have no DRM. And they are not blocked by Windows.

What I found out so far, if I open the same epub in an older version (ADE 3.0) I can copy and paste text without any problems. But if I open it in ADE 4.5.1 I can only copy once and then the option is greyed out in the context menu (also ctrl + c doesn't work). So for every copy paste I need to reopen the ebook. So it is useless for scientific work, where you need to cite a lot from different books.

Is there a workaround or will there be a patch from Adobe? Or can someone suggest a similar eReader application for desktop users?

I'm new to Adobe Digital Edition and can't find info about this problem.

I am trying to  download an ebook from a book site but when I go through all the proper steps, nothing shows up in my Library. There isn't even an error message to tell me if something was wrong.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

Computer Authorization and Downloading Ebooks

The Picture above is what try to drag and drop one of the ebooks that I have downloaded from Onedrive. Also, this morning, before Adobe Digital Editions deleted itself from my computer, it was working fine and I even uploaded Queen of Shadows to my bookshelfs though I did not get to move it to my Ereader before the app deleted itself. I tried to re-authorize my computer to Digital Editions but the app will not let me authorize my computer, I have looked up and tried everything that I can think of. The other book that I am trying to download has to be returned in a week, I would love to download it before it expires.

Can't open library book (Overdrive) on Kobo.

Kobo says it's not authorized, but it is!

I opened the book with ADE 4.5 on the computer. I can see and read it on the computer.

When I copy it to the e-reader it doesn't work!

Computer and e-reader have the same authorization - I checked it several times.

I already tried:

- Shut the e-reader on and off.

- Shut the computer on and off.

- delete the books from the e-reader and copy them on the e-reader again.

- de-authorize the e-reader and re-authorize it.

- de-authorize the computer and re-authorize it.

- delete the books from ADE and download them again.

- various combinations from above!

What's going on with ADE!?

It worked before and I didn't change anything.

Public Library customers with Kobo ereader authorization issue ADE 4.0 - 4.5, "Oops! This document couldn't be opened."

Hello Adobe support,

I work at a public library and we now have at least 8 - 12 members of the public (anecdotally more), who are unable to open Adobe DRM epub ebooks on their Kobo ereaders from our Overdrive or Freading services using Adobe Digital Editions versions between 4.0 and 4.5 and Windows 7 - 10. All of the people involved were using their Kobo with ADE successfully until just recently, and all have experienced the following set of conditions and problem:

  • ADE 4.0 - 4.5 is authorized with an Adobe ID.
  • DRM epub ebooks seem to download properly inside ADE.
  • The Kobo appears to be properly authorized and is connected via USB, appearing in ADE.
  • When the ebook is transferred to the device, it seems to work properly and no errors appear.
  • As soon as the customer ejects the Kobo and tries to open the ebook on the device itself the error message pops up: "Oops! This document couldn't be opened.  This document is protected by Adobe Digital Rights Management (DRM) and is not currently authorized for use with your Adobe ID.  Please sign-in with the authorized Adobe ID and try again."

We began receiving requests for help right with this around the week of November 8th and are continuing to receive new requests for help with this issue throughout January and as recently as today. Our primary ebook vendor has been unable to help beyond supplying the workaround of downgrading to ADE 3.0.

Most of the customers involved are using Windows 7, and Internet Explorer or an alternative browser like Firefox or Chrome - but we've had this issue occur at least once for someone using Windows 8 and twice for people with Windows 10. We also helped someone with this issue using Mac OSX 10.11. This issue has been reported mainly with Kobo Aura HD or Aura H2O, but also with Kobo Glo and Kobo Glo HD. The Kobo firmware has varied, some were using version 3.18.0 - some were using older versions. One frustrating aspect to this issue is that despite having a number of these exact devices on hand for testing, we have been unable to reproduce the issue on any of our workstations. There also doesn't seem to be a clear pattern to the titles involved.

So far, the workaround provided elsewhere on this forum and by our primary vendor has been the only way to resolve this issue for the people affected:

  1. The customer de-authorizes the Kobo and ADE 4.0 - 4.5.
  2. The customer uninstalls Adobe Digital Editions 4.X.
  3. The customer installs Adobe Digital Editions 3.0.
  4. The customer re-authorizes ADE 3.0 and the Kobo.

Does Adobe have any way to resolve this issue for customers who wish to use ADE 4.0 and up with their Kobo ereaders?

Is this issue being looked at for an upcoming build or are there any details that we could provide to help?

Please let me know and thanks for your consideration.

How do I preserve or save my highlights and notes?

I have lost my highlights and notes twice now after closing a book in digital editions and then reopening it later.  Is this a common problem?  How do I save this work so that it is still there the next time I open up the book?

download of earlier purchased e-books

Hi,
Could you please help me. Sorry if the this issue has been discussed before, unfortunately I haven't managed to find a solution and am looking for more advice. Any chance?

I have bought a new laptop and the first thing I did when I started it, I installed Adobe Digital Editions in order to download the e-books that I had downloaded before only once, knowing that I could do it up to three times. The last three of the total of the eight e-books were actually bought by me only the day before, and I downloaded them to my old computer, expecting to be able to download them again to the new one as soon as I would start it.

Unfortunately, it turned out that I was unable to download any of my eight e-books, and having contacted the customer support of the e-book provider (Bokus in Sweden), I found out that it was due to the ADE version at the old computer being for some reason not authorised with Adobe ID, although I had had my Adobe ID since earlier and hadn't expected that all my purchases would not be linked to it.

The guy at the Bokus customer support told me that there was no way to authorise the old computer with the same Adobe ID that I have now used for the new one and have had since ages before, and told me it would cost them too much money to get my licenses deactivated from the "anonymous" ID and linked to the actual ID.

I can't really believe that it's impossible to manage. I have the same e-mail address for both the Adobe ID and Bokus log-in. Could you please give me some advice? Thanks in anticipation!

Kind regards,

Mia

I really want to read that book on my e-reader, what should I do?

I have purchased a textbook in Adobe Digital Editions format. It installed on my computer (iMac) with no issues but I am unable to get the book to show up on my iPad. Both are running the latest version of Adobe Digital Editions (I had to upgrade the version on my iMac and reinstalled on my iPad) but still no sync (although sync is enabled). I believe I resolved this problem las time by transferring the ascot file to the iPad but this time Digital Editions on the iPad is reporting "Unable to download, Error getting License. Hello,

I bought an EBook off Wiley.com for University.

Had to install Adobe Digital as below:

Install Adobe Digital Editions on your PC

You MUST create an Adobe IDWindows
http://download.adobe.com/pub/adobe/digitaleditions/ADE_3.0_Installer.exe

Which I did - seem to load ok

Then tried to open the Ebook - Download your e-book file (.ACSM file) - the E book did not open but had the attached message coming up.

I have removed and reloaded the ADE 3.0 installer both from the link in Wileys and Adobe website.

Then followed the install for the Adobe Digital Editions 4.5.1 from the Adobe website.

First this came up :

Pressed ignore - then it loaded okay.

But when I tried to open book, the original error message came up again.

I am running Windows 10.

Have looked around for troubleshooting tips, but nothing seems to be the same.

Hope you can help.

Unable to open ADE 4.5 and epub files

I have a problem with Adobe Digital Editions (4.5.4) in Windows 10.  When I try to open ADE, an icon appears on the taskbar with a blue line (showing it is active), but ADE does not appear on the screen.  This happens however I try to turn it on, e.g. from the start menu, from a screen icon, or by right-clicking on an epub book in 'My Digital Editions' and telling the computer to open it using ADE.  If I try to open an epub (e.g. welcome.epub) and hover over the ADE icon on the taskbar, a thumbnail of the epub appears, but clicking on it just makes the thumbnail disappear.  When I then right-click on the ADE icon and tell it to close the window, a dialog box appears with the message (which I don't understand): "welcome.epub is not open from library, would you like to copy it to library?"  I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling ADE.

Has anyone else had this problem?  How can I get Adobe Digital Editions to open properly so that I can read my epub files?
